Passion project: private cookbook v1.1.
My girlfriend loved our private recipes website, so I built a mobile app companion. It's a simple React Native app, but I absolutely love it and use it almost every day.
Role
End-to-end
๐ Overview
What it is: A mobile companion app to our very own private recipes website (see MVP here)
Why it matters: Our website was amazing to quickly add and import new recipes, but on-the-go while standing in front of a rack and supermarket, a mobile app was much more convenient.
๐ฏ Objectives
Primary: Have a simple, clean mobile app with our recipes and their respective ingredients (the perfect shopping companion).
Secondary: Practice building a mobile app end-to-end.
๐ Success metrics
Usage: Simple mobile app fetching recipes from our database, enabling us to quickly view the steps and ingredients.
Time: MVP ready in <2 days.

๐ฏ Audience & messaging
Persona: Myself & my girlfriend (home cooks):
(1) want a single place for all recipes;
(2) value speed & simplicity;
(3) dislike ads, subscriptions, and clutter.
Key message: โOur recipes, organized. Clean, free, and made just for us.โ
๐ง Design inspiration & style
Like: minimalist UX from Creme & cooking blogs without distractions.
Avoid: ads, pop-ups, subscription walls, endless scrolling stories. No creation flow (works amazingly on web).
๐ MVP scope & timeline
MVP โ 1 day:
(1) Wireframe core app screens.
(2) Build out front-end flows
(3) Integrate the backend.

๐งโ๐ Outcome & learnings
We now use the app daily to plan meals and shopping. Absolutely love opening it up in the supermarket. It made meal prep so much easier. And I really love how the UI turned out.
